Boat, Plane or a Day Trip from Christchurch?

A Kaikoura whale watching tour takes you off the coast of Kaikoura, on New Zealand’s South Island, to look for the sperm whales that live in the deep water close to shore, by catamaran or from a small plane. The one to book first is Whale Watch Kaikoura’s Kaikoura: Whale Watching Cruise, from US$97 a person (checked November 2026): a little over 2 hours at sea and about 3 hours 15 minutes from check-in to return. If boats make you ill, a 30-minute flight covers the same water from above.

The Cruise, the Flights and What You Pay

Where the trips start, how the cruise runs, what the price covers, what happens with no whales or a rough sea, and what reviewers say.

Where the trips start

Map of Kaikoura: the Whale Watch Kaikoura base on Whaleway Station Road, the check-in point; South Bay marina, 4.1 km by road from the base; and Kaikoura Airport, 7.7 km by road from the base, used by the whale flights
Kaikoura: the Whale Watch Kaikoura base on Whaleway Station Road, South Bay marina 4.1 km by road away, and Kaikoura Airport 7.7 km by road.

The cruise starts in town. You check in at Whale Watch Kaikoura’s office at The Whaleway Station, Whaleway Station Road, and a bus takes you to the boat at the marina in South Bay and brings you back (the operator’s FAQ page, read November 2026). The marina is 4.1 km by road from the office.

The flights start south of town. Air Kaikoura's 40-minute flight checks in at Kaikoura Airport, 7.7 km by road from the cruise office, and Wings Over Whales' 30-minute flight starts at 617 State Highway 1, Peketā. The day trips collect you in Christchurch, 180 km away by road.

The cruise, start to finish

After check-in and a safety briefing, the bus runs you to the boat. The catamarans have large outdoor decks and an air-conditioned cabin with screens that play wildlife animations, and engines built to keep underwater noise down. The crew’s commentary covers the whales and their habitat, with scientific information and indigenous knowledge. Passenger numbers are kept well below the boat’s capacity.

You are on the water for just over 2 hours, and the whole trip takes about 3 hours 15 minutes with check-in, the briefing and the bus both ways. Food and drinks are not included. The minimum age is 3, and the crew can raise it at check-in if the sea is rough. The commentary is in English, and the cruise is wheelchair accessible.

What you might see

The Department of Conservation says sperm whales are found off Kaikoura all year round, in a submarine canyon where deep water comes close to the shore. Most of them are males; a typical dive lasts about 35 minutes, and adults are 11 to 18 m long. Dolphins, fur seals and the wandering albatross live in the same water. Humpbacks, orca and other whales pass at some times of year, and none of it can be promised. When you can see whales in Kaikoura goes through the year.

From May to November 2026, the cruise’s reviewers describe sperm whales on some trips, humpbacks on many, dusky dolphins and albatross, and, now and then, a trip with no whale at all.

What the price buys

The US$97 on the booking calendar is the price you pay. On the three dates we read, 27 November 2026, 20 January and 10 March 2027, every departure was US$97.10 a person, and two adults paid twice that (checked November 2026). The price covers the cruise, the crew’s narration and the bus to and from the boat. You can reserve now, pay later and cancel free up to 24 hours before.

The flights cost more for less time: Air Kaikoura's 30-minute flight is from US$122, and Wings Over Whales' from US$153 (checked November 2026). A day from Christchurch with the cruise included is from US$211 with Cheeky Kea Tours.

No whales, or too rough to sail

The cruise sails only in favourable weather. On Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026), the captain makes the call on the day, normally 15 minutes before check-in opens; a cancelled tour does not move by itself, so you ask to be put on another one.

The same FAQ page guarantees a refund of 80% of the fare when a tour sees no whale. That is the operator’s own promise, not part of the GetYourGuide booking terms. Two reviewers writing on 5 November 2026 say they got 80% back after seeing no whale; one writing in September 2026 got 40% back and one in July 20% back, after trips with few whales or no sperm whale. One September reviewer who saw only dolphins says there was no refund. When the whale watching is cancelled covers the flights and day trips too.

Flights, a helicopter and day trips

A plane covers more sea in less time and shows a whale’s full length from above, when there is one to see. Air Kaikoura and Wings Over Whales fly 30 minutes, Air Kaikoura's longer flight 40 minutes, from US$167 (checked November 2026), and Kaikoura Helicopters 30 minutes by helicopter from a helipad in the township, from US$238. All of them carry a 120 kg passenger limit or weigh you first, and Air Kaikoura’s two flights offer no refund if no whales are seen.

From Christchurch, Cheeky Kea Tours and Leisure Tours run 10- and 11-hour days that include a cruise. Kaikoura whale watching from Christchurch compares them with driving yourself.

What reviewers mention

The cruise has 3,920 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.6. We read the 350 most recent, the newest dated 8 November 2026 and the oldest 6 May: 292 give five stars and 19 give three or fewer. Eight of the low ones carry a comment. Four are about seeing little (a whale twice and far off, or one small humpback and the fins of a few dolphins); one describes a rough day, 10 to 20% of passengers sick and only dolphins; one a trip cancelled at the last minute; one an unfriendly front desk; and one, at two stars, praises the boat and the humpbacks and dolphins while regretting there were no sperm whales. Across the 350, the crew and their commentary come up more than anything else.

Before you book

  • Seasickness. Motion sickness tablets are on sale at the office; take them before you board. Whale watching and seasickness has more.
  • Age. The cruise is not for children under 3. Cheeky Kea Tours' day trip is not for children under 4.
  • Weather. For the sea and the wind, read MetService the day before; whether the boat sails is the captain’s call on the day.
  • The drive. Kaikoura is 180 km by road from central Christchurch on State Highway 1; check NZTA’s journey planner for roadworks and closures before you set off.
  • Cancelling. Every GetYourGuide tour here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.
