Kaikoura Whale Watching by Boat or by Plane

The Kaikoura whale watching cruise against the 30- and 40-minute whale flights and the helicopter: time out, where each starts, weight and age limits, refunds and price.

Updated November 2026

For most people the boat is the better Kaikoura whale watch: Whale Watch Kaikoura’s Kaikoura: Whale Watching Cruise, from US$97 a person (checked November 2026), spends just over 2 hours at sea, has no weight limit stated, and on the operator’s own terms refunds most of the fare when no whale is seen. A plane is the better answer if boats make you ill, if you have an hour rather than an afternoon, or if you travel with a child under 3. It costs more for 30 or 40 minutes, and Air Kaikoura’s flights refund nothing if no whales are seen.

The cruise checks in at Whale Watch Kaikoura’s office at The Whaleway Station, Whaleway Station Road, and a bus runs you to the marina at South Bay, 4.1 km by road, and back (the operator’s FAQ page, read November 2026). Kaikoura Airport is 7.7 km by road from that office; Air Kaikoura's 40-minute flight checks in there. Wings Over Whales starts at 617 State Highway 1, Peketā, and can arrange a courtesy transfer from your accommodation if you phone ahead. Kaikoura Helicopters flies from a helipad in the township.

Time and what you see

On the boat you have more than 2 hours on the water, at sea level, with outdoor decks and a cabin. A sperm whale’s dive lasts about 35 minutes (Department of Conservation), so a boat has time to wait for one to come up, and the crew’s commentary fills the gaps.

A plane covers more sea in 30 or 40 minutes and shows a whale’s whole length from above when one is at the surface. Every passenger has a window seat on Air Kaikoura’s and Wings Over Whales’ flights, and Air Kaikoura can move a flight, earlier too, to match the whales’ diving; if the start time moves by 30 minutes or more, you get a full refund. Under the marine mammal regulations, aircraft keep more than 150 m away horizontally and do not fly over the animals (Department of Conservation, marine mammal rules).

On the length of the Wings Over Whales flight, four reviewers between October 2024 and January 2026 say they expected 40 minutes and had a shorter flight. That flight is 30 minutes; the 40-minute one is a different product, Air Kaikoura's longer flight.
