When Kaikoura Whale Watching Is Cancelled

What cancels a Kaikoura whale watch, who decides and when, what the cruise, the flights and the day trips give back for weather or for no whales, and how to plan around it.

Updated November 2026

A Kaikoura whale watch is cancelled when the sea or the weather is too rough, and the call is made on the day: on Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026), the captain decides, normally 15 minutes before check-in opens. You cannot predict it, but you can plan for it. Book Whale Watch Kaikoura’s Kaikoura: Whale Watching Cruise, from US$97 a person (checked November 2026), for your first full day in Kaikoura, so a cancelled trip leaves time to go on another.

Who calls it off, and when

The cruise runs only in favourable weather. Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026) adds the detail: the captain alone decides whether a tour sails, on the day and normally 15 minutes before check-in opens. If your tour is cancelled, it is not moved to another departure by itself; you ask to go on another tour, and it depends on what is free.

There is no forecast we can give you. The decision is the captain’s, and we print no “sailing today” line. For the sea and the wind, read MetService’s marine forecast the day before.

From each tour’s terms on GetYourGuide and Viator, and Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page, all read in November 2026.

The 80% figure is the operator’s own promise, not part of the GetYourGuide booking terms. Two reviewers writing on 5 November 2026 say they got 80% back after a trip with no whale, and others got part of the fare back after seeing little: 40% (September 2026) and 20% when no sperm whale was seen (July 2026). One reviewer writing on 1 September 2026, who saw only dolphins on a rough day, says there was no refund.

What reviewers ran into

In the cruise’s 350 most recent reviews (6 May to 8 November 2026), one of the 19 ratings of three stars or fewer is about a cancellation: a trip called off at the last minute (the reviewer had four GetYourGuide bookings on that holiday, and three were cancelled on the day). Higher-rated reviews describe being rebooked: one reviewer, after a couple of days of cancellations for bad weather, went on an early-morning cruise, and another’s sailing was the only one of the day.

On Cheeky Kea Tours' day trip, several reviewers had the cruise cancelled for rough seas; they describe a refund for that part, a visit to the fur seals instead, and on some days a wine tasting.

On the flights, a reviewer of Air Kaikoura's flight in February 2026 writes that the boat and helicopter tours were cancelled for the weather that day while the plane still flew. Another, in March 2026, found the tours cancelled on arrival at the airport after a 5-hour round trip from Queenstown.

  • Book early in your stay. The first full day leaves the rest of your stay to try again; on the cruise you ask for the new tour yourself.
  • Keep the 24 hours in mind. You can cancel any GetYourGuide booking here free up to 24 hours before, which is before the captain’s call on the day.
  • Have the plane as a back-up. On some rough days a flight still goes. Air Kaikoura refunds in full if it cannot fly, but not if no whales are seen. Boat or flight compares the two.
  • Driving up for the day? Kaikoura is 180 km by road from Christchurch. Check NZTA’s journey planner for the road and leave room for a cancelled sailing.
