Kaikoura Whale Watching and Seasickness

Will you get seasick on the Kaikoura whale watch? The operator's warning levels, tablets at the office, what reviewers did, and whether a whale flight is easier.

Updated November 2026

Yes, you can get seasick on a Kaikoura whale watch: the cruise goes out onto open sea for just over 2 hours, and on rough days some passengers are ill. Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026) gives every tour at least a moderate chance of motion sickness. If you have managed a ferry crossing with a tablet, take Whale Watch Kaikoura’s Kaikoura: Whale Watching Cruise, from US$97 a person (checked November 2026), and take the tablet before you board.

How rough it gets

The whales live over a submarine canyon off the coast, so the boats go out onto open water. On Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026), a moderate chance of motion sickness is the standard warning on every tour, and a high chance is its highest warning. The vessels carry sickness bags.

The trip is just over 2 hours on the water. On a calm day that passes quickly; on a rough one it is a long time to feel ill. The cruise sails only in favourable weather, and the minimum age of 3 can be raised at check-in when the sea is rough.

What to do before you board

  • Take something before you arrive. Anyone prone to motion sickness is asked to deal with it before reaching the check-in office, not once on board. Motion sickness tablets are on sale at the office too. Ask a pharmacist or your doctor which kind suits you; we give no medical advice.
  • Eat lightly. A reviewer of the day trip from Christchurch suggests eating only a little before the boat.
  • Stay outside and look out. One reviewer writing in November 2026 says the best advice is to keep your phone in your pocket and not look at it while moving about; another, in May 2026, took tablets, sat at the back as advised and was fine on a rough trip.

What reviewers say about it

The cruise has 3,920 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.6. In the 350 most recent (6 May to 8 November 2026), seasickness comes up in a handful. The sharpest is a three-star review from 1 September 2026: an unstable sea, all later tours that day cancelled, and 10 to 20% of passengers sick. Others mention a rough trip they got through with tablets, and recommend taking them.

Is a whale flight easier on the stomach?

Not always. A plane spends 30 or 40 minutes in the air instead of 2 hours at sea, but it circles, and reviewers describe the pilot turning so both sides of the cabin get a view. Reviewers of Air Kaikoura's 30-minute flight in December 2025 and January 2026 say the tight circling made them or their group feel sick, and one in April 2025 found the flight bumpy in the wind.

If you still prefer the air, Air Kaikoura's flight is from US$122 (checked November 2026), limited to 7 with a window seat each, and its 40-minute flight is from US$167 (checked November 2026). Both have a 120 kg passenger limit and give no refund if no whales are seen. Boat or flight sets the two side by side.

The day trip from Christchurch

Cheeky Kea Tours' day trip adds about 180 km of road each way to the same cruise. Anyone prone to seasickness is asked to bring anti-nausea pills, and a reviewer in October 2026 warns that the road is very curvy. Kaikoura from Christchurch covers the day.
