When Can You See Whales in Kaikoura?

Sperm whales are off Kaikoura all year. Which other whales pass and when, what reviewers saw month by month in 2026, and morning or afternoon trips.

Updated November 2026

You can see whales in Kaikoura in any month. The Department of Conservation says sperm whales are present off Kaikoura all year round, feeding in a submarine canyon where deep water comes close to the shore, so the best time to go is whenever your trip brings you there. Book Whale Watch Kaikoura’s Kaikoura: Whale Watching Cruise, from US$97 a person (checked November 2026), for the day you are in town; other whales pass at some times of year, and no month guarantees any of them.

Sperm whales, every month

Kaikoura’s sperm whales are, in the Department of Conservation’s words, “the most well studied New Zealand population of sperm whales”. They are found there all year, in deep water close to the shore. The population includes resident and passing animals, most of them males. Adults are 11 to 18 m long.

What decides a sighting on the day is the dive. Most dives last about 35 minutes and reach about 400 m, and some last over an hour and go deeper than 1,000 m (Department of Conservation). A whale at the surface between dives is what the boats and planes are looking for, so a trip may wait at one spot for a whale to come up, and the flights can move their departure times to follow the dives.

Other whales, dolphins and birds

Beyond the sperm whales, Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026) lists New Zealand fur seals, dusky dolphins and the wandering albatross through the year, humpback, pilot, blue, southern right and fin whales at some seasons, and orca often in summer. We found no month-by-month table for these species at the Department of Conservation, so we print no humpback or orca season.

What reviewers saw, May to November 2026

The cruise’s 350 most recent reviews on GetYourGuide run from 6 May to 8 November 2026. By the month the review was written:

Month writtenReviewsWith a commentMention humpbacksMention sperm whales
May 20265223711
June 2026461757
July 2026291134
August 2026391546
September 2026361633
October 202610842111
November 2026 (to the 8th)401414

A mention is not always a sighting: “no sperm whales, only humpbacks” counts in both columns. Reviews are written after the trip, often days later.

The pattern in these comments is humpbacks through the winter and spring of 2026 and fewer sperm whales named in October, when one reviewer saw one humpback and stayed with it for two hours and another saw no sperm whales but humpbacks and dusky dolphins. Two reviewers writing on 5 November saw no whale at all. Read it as one season’s luck, not a forecast.

The cruise runs several departures a day, and the calendar above shows which ones are on sale for your date. We have no figures showing that one time of day finds more whales. Two things can still tip the choice.

  • A spare morning. A morning trip leaves the rest of the day free to rebook if the sea cancels it. On Whale Watch Kaikoura’s FAQ page (read November 2026), a cancelled tour is not moved by itself; you ask for another one.
  • Dusky dolphins. From November to March, the same FAQ page restricts dusky dolphin viewing between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, “under Department of Conservation rules”. We could not find that rule on the Department of Conservation’s own pages, so treat it as the operator’s practice.

Pick a departure

The 30-minute flights work the other way round: Air Kaikoura can move a flight, earlier too, to match the whales’ diving, and asks you to check in 30 minutes before. Boat or flight compares them.

Weather by season

The cruise runs only in favourable weather, in every month. For the sea state on your day, read MetService’s marine forecast the day before, and see what happens when a trip is cancelled.
